Jack feels lonely now that his mother died. His father, Mr. Zimp, is a scientist who often doesn’t give Jack time and attention. Jack doesn’t know it, but as he sits under the orange tree outside an orange named Olivia wants to be his friend. Then hopefully, neither would be lonely again. Jack decides to pick some oranges from the tree. Jack delivers Olivia to his father for a snack. While his father focuses on his work he didn’t notice when the formula spilled on Olivia. It transformed her to have arms and legs. Olivia is now an orple, becoming person-like. She quickly moves away from the science equipment and stumbles upon Mrs. Mouse. Mr. Zimp creates another orple named Oscar. Olivia, Oscar, Mrs. Mouse, and Jack now must work together to get the orples back to their tree where they belong.
How Orples Came to Be is the first book with the orples. The sequel is The Orples Make a Tree Home. The Orples Learn to Read is the third book in the series.
